About Adventure!

Welcome to Adventure! The Quack of Dawn

Adventure! was released in September, 2025 at the Vintage Computer Festival - Midwest!

You awaken from a deep slumber, disoriented, and find yourself in a small chamber. As you regain your wits, you realize the experiment must have been a success. You most certainly are not dead! At least not yet. You feel fine and a quick inventory confirms you are intact. You are a little concerned as the air is thin on oxygen. It won't sustain you for long. The instrument readouts you expect to see are dead. Fortunately, the safety release is manually operated from within and doesn't require power. Let's get out of here, shall we?

As you emerge, you see that the facility housing the time sarcophagus has disappeared. Around you, is a pleasant forest glen. The sun is bright, the temperature comfortable, and you smell fragrant wildflowers. You have a feeling you are being watched. You slowly turn around and see an odd looking fellow, cloaked, smoking a pipe, sitting on a stone, staring at you intently.

In a world, where every step is a struggle for survival, and the line between friend and foe is blurred in the ashes of what was once an advanced civilization, you must learn how to survive. You will navigate this strange world that has succumbed to the aftermath of some cataclysmic event, leaving only remnants of the past and haunting echoes of what once was. The choices you make will shape your destiny. Only through wit, resourcefulness, and a keen survival instinct can you hope to unravel the secrets that lie buried beneath the ruins.

This is your journey in a world reborn - your adventure begins!

Adventure!, the Quack of Dawn, is a mostly text adventure game writ in the classic style. The motive is entirely selfish, the purpose is pleasure, the player and programmer are intellectual equals, and the experience is very informal.

Adventure! is not just a game. It is a text adventure game system written in Apple HyperCard. Bill Atkinson conceived, designed and implemented HyperCard, an early and influential hypermedia system. HyperCard put the power of computer programming and database design into the hands of nonprogrammers. Bill is also well known as the principal designer and developer of Apple's graphical user interface (GUI) for the Apple Lisa and one of the first members of the Apple Macintosh design team and the creator of MacPaint.

Although you'll need HyperCard to run Adventure!, Eric's Edge Games has made Adventure! available with the magic of emulation. Not only is a downloadable version of Adventure! available for your classic Apple Macintosh computer system. Adventure! is also be available as an emulated Apple Macintosh computer ready to run in Microsoft Windows or Linux!

The Adventure! HyperCard stack is the game engine and user interface for playing text adventure games. The Adventure! Game Editor HyperCard stack is an interactive game editor for authors to create text adventure games. Including game content, the player, location descriptions, game items such as weapons, tools, and food, non-player characters, and game maps.
