Windows 7

So ... yesterday I received my Win7 disc from DELL. That was the deal, when I bought this computer, two months ago, that I would get Win7 as soon as it was released.

The instruction for the installation was pretty straightforward. It told me to stay connected during the installation. However, and that was the part that made me feel most uncertain during this process: It [the first part] removed/uninstalled my wireless network card! So there was no way of staying connected during the installation.

I think that made a big difference. In that end of the process, there was a point where I had a choice. The first choice was green and was the recommended way ... but I couldn't select that because I wasn't online. I have a feeling of that it made a clean install and put some stuff in a folder called Windows.old.

So far I've only been using it for one evening and now this morning. I lost the integrated webcam. Searched all the forums at DELL, and there were oodles of people asking the very same questions. I think they must do something about that, because it came with the computer -- it's brand new and it should work, since it's there!

I've looked for drivers, I've tried to open it from the Windows.old folder but that tells me there are missing files.

Last night when I went to bed, I closed the lid as usual. This morning the computer was shut off. That's new! It used to wake up when I opened the lid. Went into the power options and looked what closing the lid is supposed to do. It said SLEEP. To be honest, I don't know what the difference is between SLEEP and HIBERNATION, but either way it was completely shut off this morning.

Well, it's way too early to tell what this is like. It LOOKS nice alright.. and I had the opportunity to try Vista for two months. I'd heard so many negative things about it, but never experienced any trouble during my short period with it.  Okay, it was a little annoying with all those pop-up security boxes or whatever, but that was all.

I want my web cam back and I want to just wake it up in the morning ... that's all I can say at this point.

Sounds like the power supply was cut off while the laptop was sleeping. That's basically the only difference between Sleep and Hibernate: Sleep shuts off power to MOST of the system, resulting in a very low power state. Hibernate stores your current system status in a file and completely shuts down the system. Here is a more detailed explanation: http://bit.ly/elf9Z

Thanks for the link. I understand it now.

I didn't change anything in the settings about the lid so I'll see tomorrow morning, or perhaps later today, what it does...if the powers shuts off after a certain amount of time something's wrong. I had to turn it on with the power switch this morning.

I'm beginning to think this has something to do with the anti virus program. Yesterday we were out for at least five hours. Came back and it was sleeping nicely -- easy to wake up.

This morning is the second morning and it was SHUT OFF again. We have not had any power outages here.

strange.. I wonder if they are making it shut off after a certain period of time, you keep it plugged in, right?
I do not think I will get Windows 7, I got my laptop in January and Vista works fine, I do not mind the security stuff..

Oh, I sorted it out! It's alright now... Found out in its «Sleep settings» that it was set to go into hibernation after 360 minutes and I guess I, myself, sleep longer than that :) Adjusted that and now it's all fine..

I was going to say go into power settings but 7 might be a lot different than Vista or XP. Can you find anything on their website? I think you can talk live to someone on there can't you? I believe I have used live chat before.

The first of this just made me think of the times I have talked to the guys in online chat. They ALWAYS say shut down your computer and restart please. haha Never thinking that we will be disconnected. Good thing they get your number at the first and verify.

Oh, the hibernation thing is all sorted out. That was in the power settings. I'll check and see if they have live web chat tomorrow. I don't want to call them on the phone...I'm trying to avoid that the longest, because it gets too confusing. It's outsourced and as English is after all my second languge, it gets very difficult for me on the PHONE, with someone who is usually sounding totally stressed out AND with a heavy accent. Writing in a chat would be okay..
