Posting pictures

As I don't have a «theme» for my Posterous and don't want to use this as a personal diary, it has become a big mix of anything and everything. I've pretty much given up on making this more structured at this point. It will probably stay this way -- odds and ends of stuff that I find on the web. Things that I find funny, interesting enough or curious to save.

I don't know how many pictures (or what file size) one can attach in an email so I've attached a big bunch here now to see it it works :)

POLL: Tumblr Edges Out Posterous in Reader Vote

tumblr-posterousIf you were with us last week, you witnessed a mighty battle between our two winning browsers from an earlier poll, Firefox and Chrome. Almost 9,000 votes later, Firefox emerged victorious and took the crown for Favorite Mashable Browser.

Earlier this week we kicked off a new Faceoff, this time pitting Tumblr against Posterous for the simple blogging service crown. We have the winner of this contest now, drumroll please…

Tumblr (Tumblr

) ended up taking the title in a relatively close race with 51% of the vote. Many of you cited the community surrounding Tumblr as a great reason to use the tool, and many in the Posterous (Posterous

) camp said the simplicity of posting by email was unbeatable.

Still, in the end Tumblr came out on top with 1809 votes to Posterous’s 1496 (42%). The remainder of the voters couldn’t decide, with 256 or 7% reporting being unable to choose a victor.

Thanks for tuning in to the second in our Faceoff series. Be sure to check back on Monday for the next round of dueling web services!

Web Faceoff: Overall Results

Week 1:
- Mozilla Firefox (Mozilla Firefox

) vs. Google Chrome (Google Chrome

)
- WINNER: Firefox (Firefox

), 4600 votes (Chrome (Chrome

): 3310 votes, Tie: 911 votes)

Week 2:
- Tumblr vs. Posterous
- WINNER: Tumblr, 1809 votes (Posterous: 1496 votes, Tie: 256 votes)

I read here that many stated the sense of community in Tumblr. That I can understand. We don't have much of that here in Posterous, that I know of. In that case it has eluded me completely.

VatorNews - The startup culture at Posterous

And now, from our Sponsor Smule:  For those of you who have the Ocarina app on your iPhone or iPod touch, Smule has just released a new songbook. Head over to smule.com to download it and learn to play folksongs from around the world!"

Garry Tan, Co-founder of Posterous compared his his blogging platform to life in North Beach, "People live here, people eat here.  That's the kind of site we want to have, actually.  Some place that's actually lived in."  It all made sense when thinking about what Posterous offers its users - a platform to post blog entries, not limited to 140 character Tweets, but instead, through the most universal of all Internet communication technologies, email.

Launched in July of 2008,  Posterous is a blogging platform based on the notion of simplicity.  It enables its users to post on their blogs via email, which Tan referred to as, "the universal API."  Users can upload various forms of rich media like photos, videos and audio clips, which Posterous takes and re-formats for optimal display on the user's blog.

The startup also recently released an iPhone app called PicPosterous, which lets users create an album and upload photos to that album in real time.  The album can instantly be viewed on the user's blog in a nifty player which updates as users upload more photos from whatever party or event they are at.  Also, just a few days ago, Posterous launched a new 'theming feature', enabling users to change the look and style of their pages.  To make things more universal, users can create their own CSS/HTML themes, along with obviously importing others.

Posterous came out of Y-Combinator last year and since then raised $740,000 in funding from XG Ventures and several angel investors including Guy Kawasaki.  The startup said it isn't looking for further investment at the moment and would rather keep things lean.

In this segment of Startup Sessions, we hung out with the owners who showed us around their new North Beach location and why to them it was a better choice than following the trend of opening shop in SoMa.

We're looking for startups to feature on our show!  Please contact Chris Caceres via Vator to arrange for an interview.

I did it! I Finally Did It!!! Moved my domain to Posterous

The idea has matured for quite some time now and tonight I guess it had ripened.

I figured, what the heck ... it's here I like to post and write -- I do all my stuff here, I post photos to Twitter to here and all that hoopla. When I realized I could still keep all the other parts associated with the domain over at Google ... such as mail, docs, sites and so on.

Had been meaning to wait until they allowed some kind of customization here but ... what the heck again! I'm a little bit off that and should I really feel the urge to put in some fancy backgrounds I still have Multiply for that purpose. Think I'll ask them if any kind of customization is in the offing. At least perhaps we'll be able to choose color of links or even background.

While I'm awaiting some kind of import tool here, my old blog lives here: http://muffinby.blogspot.com. I did the import/export thing. Everything worked like a breeze ... there were just a number I had to fill in at GoDaddy and then I was all set. I'm very pleased with my decision.

Posterous' Patience

Yesterday I wanted to see if I was able to post photos to my Posterous. Thought I did everything right but no pictures showed up. Something did show up, but not in my own blog. Got more and more confused, so finally I wrote to support.

It's all sorted out now -- after twelve (12!!!) emails. I just say one thing: *OMG* what a patient guy (Sachin)!

At least I'm able to laugh at myself ... couldn't believe that I, who used to know every nook and crannie about my cellphone ... was this out of it after five years away from them.

For a while I felt so frustrated with the whole thing so I got out, went up the hill and shot some photos of Saint John. A gull was posing...

I have a good feeling...

about this place and just wanted to wrie something before turning in for the night. I've been rather fed up with my regular Multiply blog lately so this came as a welcome addition. It's fresh...simple..and elegant. I don't see any ads. One wonders how they finance the whole thing?!

Fired up Photoshop tonight for the first time in ages.

Here's the result of that session...Keep It Simple and Stupid :)
